Care and Maintenance Guide

Glass Care

  • Never use petroleum cleaners, razor blades, putty knifes or abrasive pads to clean the glass. Do not use high pressured spray nozzles when rinsing your windows after washing. All of these practices may cause damage to the glass surface, the insulated glass seal, or component parts.
  • Avoid glass cleaners that are ammonia or alcohol based. These may leave streaks. Instead, use a lint-free cloth or chamois, and clean glass with a mixture of mild dish soap and water. Rinse completely with clear water then wipe dry with a soft cloth to avoid water spots.
  • To remove grease sealant from the glass, use mineral spirits sparingly, then wash with a vinegar-based solution (10% vinegar and 90% water).
  • If your windows or doors have grilles applied to the outside face of the glass, the adhesive backing used to apply these grilles may deteriorate should it meet certain cleaning agents. Use standard residential glass cleaner for windows or doors utilizing applied grilles with adhesive backing.

Aluminum Cleaning

  • Vacuum or blow out dirt and debris from sill and track.
  • Clean window and door frames with a mixture of mild dish soap. Avoid harsh abrasive cleaners as they may cause permanent damage.
  • Make sure the exterior sill is clear of dirt and debris. Especially around the bottom corners of the screen. Dirt and debris can accumulate in these areas and reduce, or in some cases, eliminate the window’s ability to drain rainwater away from the window.
  • Do not use insecticides (bug spray) on or near window surface.

Wood Surfaces

  • Remove surface dirt and check the exterior of wood windows at least once a year to ensure that wood is not exposed to the elements by failing caulk or paint that has cracked, peeled or bubbled.
  • Remove superficial surface dirt by washing painted wood exteriors with water and a soft-bristled, long-handled brush.
  • Grease or oily substances may require stronger cleaning compounds. Avoid solvents or abrasive cleaners. Don’t let strong detergents, ammonia, chemicals or other harsh cleaning substances get onto finished exterior surfaces, which can be damaged.
  • Nicks and scratches in a painted finish can be touched up with a matching, high-quality latex primer and paint.
  • If you have a brand new, bare wood or primed window or door, you must finish it immediately to prevent  possible damage to the wood.

Screen Care

  • Clean screens by first removing, then washing on a flat surface. Clean screen surface with mild soap water. Rinse, pat dry and reinstall.

Condensation & Mold

  • It is important to remember that windows and doors do not cause condensation. Condensation is caused by excessive humidity (air moisture) in the home.
